How to Calculate Your Take-Home Pay

Understanding the gap between your gross salary and your net pay isn't just interesting — it's essential for budgeting, negotiating, and planning your financial life. Here's exactly how the math works.

What Comes Out of Your Paycheck?

Every paycheck has deductions in two categories: taxes you can't avoid and deductions you choose (like retirement contributions or health insurance). This guide focuses on the mandatory tax withholdings.

The four main pieces are:

  • Federal income tax — based on your income bracket and filing status
  • State income tax — varies wildly by state (nine states have none at all)
  • Social Security tax — 6.2% on the first $176,100 of wages
  • Medicare tax — 1.45% on all wages (plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000)

Step 1: Calculate Federal Income Tax

The US uses a progressive tax system. That means different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. A common misconception: your "tax bracket" is not your tax rate on all your income — it's only the rate on income in that bracket.

For 2026, the federal brackets for a single filer are:

  • 10% on income up to $11,925
  • 12% on income from $11,925 to $48,475
  • 22% on income from $48,475 to $103,350
  • 24% on income from $103,350 to $197,300
  • 32% on income from $197,300 to $250,525
  • 35% on income from $250,525 to $626,350
  • 37% on income over $626,350

Before applying these brackets, you subtract the standard deduction: $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for married filing jointly in 2026. That's your taxable income.

Example: $75,000 gross salary, single filer.
Taxable income = $75,000 - $15,000 = $60,000
Federal tax = (10% × $11,925) + (12% × $36,550) + (22% × $11,525)
= $1,192.50 + $4,386 + $2,535.50 = $8,114

Effective rate: $8,114 / $75,000 = 10.8%

Step 2: Calculate FICA Taxes

FICA stands for the Federal Insurance Contributions Act. It covers Social Security and Medicare. Unlike income tax, FICA hits your gross wages before any deductions.

Social Security: 6.2% on wages up to $176,100 (the "wage base" for 2026). If you earn more than $176,100, you stop paying Social Security tax on the excess.

Medicare: 1.45% on all wages with no cap. High earners (over $200,000 single) pay an additional 0.9% on the excess, for a total Medicare rate of 2.35% on those wages.

Example continued: $75,000 salary
Social Security = $75,000 × 6.2% = $4,650
Medicare = $75,000 × 1.45% = $1,087.50
FICA total = $5,737.50

Step 3: Add State Income Tax

This one varies enormously. If you live in Texas, Florida, Nevada, or six other states, your state income tax is $0. If you live in California, you could owe 9.3% or more. Oregon tops out at 9.9%.

Most states with income taxes use graduated brackets like the federal system, though some states use a flat rate (Pennsylvania at 3.07%, Illinois at 4.95%, etc.).

Example continued: Living in Georgia (5.49% flat rate)
State tax = $75,000 × 5.49% = $4,117.50

Putting It Together

Here's the full picture for our $75,000 example (single, Georgia):

  • Gross salary: $75,000
  • Federal income tax: $8,114
  • Social Security: $4,650
  • Medicare: $1,087.50
  • Georgia state tax: $4,117.50
  • Total taxes: $17,969
  • Take-home pay: $57,031/year ($2,193/biweekly paycheck)
  • Effective total tax rate: 23.9%

What's Not Included in This Calculation

Real paychecks often have more deductions: 401(k) or 403(b) contributions, health insurance premiums, dental/vision, HSA contributions, life insurance, and so on. These pre-tax deductions reduce your taxable income and can meaningfully lower your tax bill.

For example, if you contribute $6,000/year to a traditional 401(k), your taxable income drops to $54,000, and you'd owe less federal tax. That's one reason financial advisors push people to max out pre-tax accounts.
